Grass on Top of the Grade

Hydroseeding in Apex happens on high ground, and that is how the town got its name. When the Chatham Railroad was finished in 1869, workers called its highest point the apex of the grade. Today Apex is known to drainage engineers for something related: the town crests the divide between the Neuse and Cape Fear watersheds, so runoff from one side of town heads east and the other heads south.

Why the divide matters for a lawn

On a ridge, water rarely ponds for long, but it does pick up speed as it runs off. A graded lot near the top of a rise can shed rain fast enough to cut small rills before grass roots in. We match mulch rate and tackifier to the slope, and on longer runs we suggest a swale lined with an erosion control blanket so water has a planned path.

Big ground being opened up

The Veridea project, first proposed in 2009, began site preparation in 2025 and is planned for about 8,000 homes by 2035. New neighborhoods have also spread west of the US 64 and NC 55 area. Large phased sites like that need temporary seeding on stockpiles and idle pads, silt fence and sediment control on the perimeter, and permanent hydroseeding once each phase reaches final grade.

A pond that disappeared

The railroad's high point once had a pond where trains took on water. Culverts drained it, and it was gone by 1900. Old drained spots like that are a reminder that some Apex lots carry fill or hidden wet layers, which is why we probe soft areas before spreading topsoil.

Weather to plan around

Apex averages about 48 inches of precipitation a year, with September the wettest month at a little over 5 inches. We like to finish fall seeding before the wettest stretch or protect it well if it falls during one.

  • Name origin. The town is named for the highest point on the Chatham Railroad, completed in 1869, called the apex of the grade.
  • Veridea. The Veridea development began site preparation in 2025 and plans about 8,000 residential units by 2035.
  • Rainfall. Average annual precipitation is about 48.33 inches, with September the wettest month at 5.27 inches.

Apex Questions

My lot is near the top of a hill. Why did the last seeding wash out?

Runoff speeds up as it leaves high ground. Heavier mulch, tackifier and a planned swale usually solve it.

Do you work on phased builder sites like those around Veridea?

Yes. We can do temporary cover on idle areas and permanent hydroseeding as each phase is finished.

Where does Apex get its water, and does that affect lawn rules?

Apex is supplied from Jordan Lake through Cary's utility. We follow any watering limits in effect when we set a seeding schedule.

Can you check for soft or filled ground before seeding?

Yes. We probe soft spots and fix grading problems before spraying, since seed will not hide a settling area.
