A Town With Its Own Soil Name
Hydroseeding in Creedmoor runs into a soil named after the town. The Creedmoor soil series was described from a site about 3 miles southwest of Creedmoor and formed from Triassic sandstone, mudstone, siltstone and shale. Its surface is a sandy or silty loam, but the subsoil is 35 to 60 percent clay with high shrink-swell potential and very slow permeability.
What that means for a lawn
Water moves through the top few inches easily and then stalls on the clay below. After a long rain, Creedmoor soils can stay soggy at the surface; in a drought the clay shrinks and cracks. We keep finish grades sloped away from foundations, avoid low pockets, and sometimes add a drain line before seeding. Our crews handle the trenching for that work.
Lake Rogers
The 175-acre Lake Rogers, in the northwest part of the city, is used for picnicking, fishing and boating. Creedmoor lies within the Neuse River watershed, so streams from town eventually reach the Neuse system. Silt fence on graded lots keeps soil out of the lake and creeks.
Farm history
Creedmoor was once a bigger tobacco market than Durham, with four tobacco warehouses built in the early 1900s, and it was known as Mule Town for its mule trade. Much of the land around town was row-cropped for decades, which often leaves a compacted layer to break up before seeding.
Steady growth
The city grew 84.8 percent from 2000 to 2010 and reached 4,866 people in 2020. New homes on former fields are the main source of lawn installation work here.

Creedmoor Questions
Why does my yard stay soggy after rain?
Creedmoor soils have a very slow clay subsoil. Grading for runoff and sometimes a drain line solve it.
Will the clay crack my new lawn in a drought?
Shrink-swell clay can crack, but deeper-rooted grass and good soil prep reduce the damage.
Do you install drains before seeding?
Yes. We can trench and set a drain line, then grade and hydroseed over it.
Is old farm ground hard to seed?
It is often compacted. We loosen it before spraying.
